GABA Calming

GABA Calming Support

Handle the ups and downs of life with more composure

When you’re more calm and collected, you’re much less likely to overreact to the inevitable frustrations of life – and far more likely to think clearly and respond appropriately.

If your hectic schedule (and these days that means everyone) is causing you too much aggravation, frustration, and irritability, take a deep breath and try GABA Calming Support.

GABA Calming Support helps support the production of calming brain waves, correct stress-causing nutritional deficiencies, and promotes relaxation. The formula’s key ingredient, GABA, is shown in studies to help increase calming brain waves, while reducing “anxious” brain waves.

This comprehensive relaxation formula also includes vitamin B6 and magnesium, as well as lemon balm, an herb traditionally known for its calming effects.

Ingredients & Facts

  • GABA
Gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA) is an amino acid and neurotransmitter that regulates brain excitability by inhibiting excessive firing of neurons, resulting in a sense of calm. Supplementing with GABA can help flip the "off" switch on worrisome, ruminating thoughts by supporting the body’s natural mechanism for quieting the mind.
  • L-Theanine
This unique amino acid is not incorporated into proteins and seems to regulate GABA, dopamine and serotonin circuits. It is rapidly absorbed and quickly shifts the brain toward a predominance of alpha waves, which are associated with relaxation. Clinical research indicates l-theanine can have calming and relaxing effects while preserving mental focus.
  • Lemon balm
Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a member of the mint family and has been used as a medicinal herb in Southern Europe for many years. Research suggests that it may inhibit GABA transaminase, the main enzyme that breaks down GABA, therefore ensuring the brain maintains a healthy supply.

In one controlled study, volunteers taking higher doses of lemon balm extract experienced better mood and significantly increased calmness and alertness. [Source: Lemon balm | University of Maryland Medical Center]
  • Magnesium
Known as "the relaxation mineral," magnesium plays an important role in muscle relaxation, energy production, and the de-activation of adrenaline. Research suggests that magnesium’s calming properties are enhanced when taken with Vitamin B6. Magnesium may also help to correct stress-causing nutrient deficiencies.
  • Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is important in the production of such critical neurotransmitters as serotonin, epinephrine, norepinephrine, GABA – which help improve mood -- and melatonin, a hormone that supports your natural body clock.

The Science

  • GABA
GABA or gamma-aminobutyric acid is an amino acid that regulates excitability of the brain through GABA receptors. It is essential for brain metabolism and functions to decrease neuronal activity and inhibit nerve cells from excess firing. GABA has mild relaxation properties and can enhance mood and support sleep. Clinical studies on GABA are limited but electroencephalogram (EEG) studies demonstrate the efficacy of GABA supplementation on increasing alpha band brain wave function, which serves to induce relaxation and alleviate stress.1

  • Lemon Balm
Lemon Balm (Melissa Officinalis) is a perennial shrub of the Lamiaceae family which has been attributed as a calming agent with mild sedative effects and is often used to reduce anxiety and stress. It has been demonstrated to improve cognitive performance and increase calmness in healthy volunteers.1-3

  • Magnesium
Magnesium is a mineral essential in a variety of cellular processes including cellular respiration, protein synthesis, membrane stability, regulation of vascular tone and is important in the neuromuscular and cardiovascular systems.1 More than 300 enzyme systems use magnesium as a cofactor. As magnesium is required for stabilization of the nerve cell, chronic deficiencies can interfere with the transmission of nerve impulses, resulting in irritability and restlessness. Supplementing the body with magnesium can reduce inflammation2 and promote relaxation and calm. Preliminary studies where magnesium is combined with a vitamin B6 regimen demonstrate improvement in attention and reduction in central nervous system hyperexcitability in some children.3,4

  • Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is a water-soluble vitamin essential in the metabolic pathways of amino acids, glucose, and fatty acids and is a cofactor in the production of neurotransmitters including serotonin, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and GABA. It is required by the nervous system and is needed for normal brain function as well as DNA synthesis. Supplementation with Vitamin B6 alone and in combination with other nutrients has been shown to be helpful to improve attention in children.1-4
