Methyl Support for Mood, Brain Health and Wellbeing
Promotes Healthy Mood
Methylfolate (MF) is the body's most fully active form of folate, a vitamin that provides methyl groups (-CH3) which are crucial for a broad range of brain functions, including healthy mood. In clinical trials, MF corrected methyl deficiency while promoting healthy mood and overall brain health.
Highly Bioavailable Source of Methyl Groups
Normally, to be utilized by the body dietary folates from foods or supplements must first be converted to methylfolate, identical to MF. But the enzymes involved in this conversion process often carry mutations that impair their activity, so that more than 1 in 4 people are inefficient at converting folates to MF. High-quality MF supplements bypass these enzymes, directly supplying methyl to make SAME (s-adenosyl-methionine) and other methyl cofactors that manage the body's extensive networks of methyl metabolism.
Promotes Metabolic Recycling of Homocysteine
Homocysteine (HCy) is a byproduct of SAMe production from MF and the amino acid methionine. If allowed to build up in the blood and other tissues, HCy can become toxic. MF facilitates the recycling of HCy to methionine, thereby curbing its toxic potential.
Supports Brain Health Across the Lifespan
Methyl from MF is needed from the moment of fertilization of the human egg, through the development of the brain, heart and other organs, to birth, and all across the lifespan. All our cells need methyl groups to make their DNA, repair ongoing DNA damage, and regulate their utilization of DNA. Nerve cells especially need methyl to make their synapses (which connect them to other nerve cells) and to make their myelin insulation (which speeds conduction of their electrical signals to other nerve cells). They also need methyl for their dopamine, adrenaline and noradrenaline neurotransmitters that regulate mood, and to make the hormone melatonin that regulates sleep. MF is a key nutrient not just for our brain health, but for our total health and wellbeing as well.
Ingredients & Facts
Folate is a vitamin that the body has to obtain from foods or supplements. Methylfolate (MF) is the body's most active form of folate and its main resource for methyl groups. Unlike food folates and folic acid, MF does not require conversion by the enzyme MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase), which is notorious for carrying crippling mutations such as C677T. Some 200 enzymes use MF to make large quantities of s-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), an essential cofactor for the mood neurotransmitters dopamine, adrenaline and noradrenaline. MF supplies our cells with methyl for crucial survival functions: to make and maintain their DNA and genes, generate phospholipids for their cell membranes, recycle potentially toxic homocysteine, backup antioxidant defenses. The brain's neurons and support cells need MF to construct their billions of synaptic connections and to produce myelin insulation vital for their electrical signaling. They also need methyl to make melatonin, the sleep hormone. Numerous clinical studies document MF's essentiality for fetal brain, heart and other healthy organ development; for healthy mood, cognition and behavior; and for overall wellbeing from birth through old age. Folate can be depleted by drugs such as antacids, antibiotics, aspirin and other painkillers, certain diuretics, estrogen replacement therapy, anticonvulsants, and SSRI psychotherapeutics. Supplementing with MethylFolate from BrainMD Health helps ensure that the brain and body will receive sufficient methyl to maintain health and wellbeing. It is fully compatible with SAMe Mood & Movement 400 and with Betaine TMG, and may well enhance their mood benefits.
