The Problem With Some Turmeric and Curcumin Supplements

Although often used interchangeably, the words curcumin and turmeric actually describe two different things. Turmeric is a yellow-orange spice, related to ginger, that is found in curry, while curcumin is the naturally occurring chemical compound in turmeric.

There are three major curcumins – curcumin, demethoxy-curcumin, and bis-demethoxycurcumin – which are the substances most responsible for the 4,000-plus years of traditional medicinal use of turmeric root.

Modern science has extensively researched these curcumins (technically, curcuminoid polyphenols) and established their powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits along with a myriad of other positive actions. It isn’t difficult to find research demonstrating the health benefits of curcumin, including benefits to cardiovascular health, cognitive health, and mood.

But they have a fatal flaw: they are normally very poorly absorbed when taken by mouth.

In fact, conventional curcumin powders and supplements can be so poorly absorbed that NO curcumin is actually found in the bloodstream – which translates to no appreciable benefit to the brain and body.

Additionally, there is very little consistency in terms of quality control among curcumin supplements. Research done by ConsumerLab.com found that more than 20% of turmeric and curcumin supplements they selected for review delivered less than 15% of the advertised amount of the compounds.

BrainMD Health is very proud to introduce Brain Curcurmins containing LONGVIDA® Optimized Curcumin Extract – a breakthrough formula optimized to deliver curcumin into target tissues through the critical bioavailability requirements of permeability, solubility, and stability. This dramatically improved oral absorption is verified by human trials.

Furthermore, a triple-blinded clinical trial revealed important brain benefits of LONGVIDA®: conservation of working memory, improved calmness and “contentedness” (roughly equating to satisfaction) when under mental strain, and less tendency to physical fatigue from such challenges. In this trial the curcumin group also showed cardiovascular benefit, by lowering total and LDL cholesterol statistically better than the placebo group.

The Brain Curcumins supplement from the BrainMD Health team supplies 25% more LONGVIDA® per capsule (500 mg) than was used in the clinical trial (400 mg), for additional benefit to mind and body.

So if you are looking for a supplement that promotes alertness and calmness, supports working memory while under mental strain, and which is protective to your brain and body through powerful antioxidants, give BrainMD Health’s Brain Curcumins a try – your satisfaction is guaranteed!

What about the health benefits of eating turmeric as either powder or fresh root? I am pretty sure that Mother Nature didn’t think that we ought to start extracting components from her products.

I don’t doubt that this supplement works however the Indian population has been using turmeric in food for a very long time and that seems to work, too.

Any thoughts?

Amen Clinics

The curcumin content of turmeric is not very high – only around 3%. In order to receive the full benefits as demonstrated by clinical studies, you would need to use VERY large amounts of turmeric in your food every day. Therefore, most people prefer to use a supplement.

Pam

Does this product contain peperine?

Amen Clinics

No, it does not. Thanks to the revolutionary formulation, it is not required to pair the curcumin with perperine in order to achieve increased, optimized absorption.

jerzy

Lol you are hilarious he way you market your revolutionary product

Hello Amen Clinics,
My question is this, why is curcumin the predominate extract used in most supplements? Also please give your argument against Dr. Michael Greger, who states that studies have shown whole turmeric root is dramatically more effective in
various clinical trials, https://nutritionfacts.org/….

There’s also the concern with how every supplement of curcumin stresses how we
need to get the largest dose absorbed into the bloodstream for the health benefits. Please discuss why this is and how studies have shown that large doses of curcumin can cause DNA damage is not to be
considered?, shttps://academic.oup.com/t….

I’m confused about the purpose of this product. I have always heard about turmeric being used as an anti-inflammatory. My husband has been taking for a month or so now. It seems to help a bit and he is not in as much pain as he was. This brand seems to be promoting it has a brain function product, and anti-inflammatory benefits appear to be a secondary side benefit. Is this something that he should take if his objective is anti-inflammation?

Kristie Kristie

Brain inflammation is common and causes a myriad of brain issues

Amen Clinics

Hi Laurie, this product has anti-inflammatory benefits for the brain and the body!

Jill, I agree with your comment. Why can’t we get the nutrients straight from the root as mother nature intended? You see it won’t work because the pharmaceutical companies will not be able to take the little money we have left.

Jake

I’m not sure I understand. You state that curcumins are poorly absorbed by mouth, yet you are selling a capsule (that I would guess) also goes through the mouth?

I’m under the impression that the actual absorption is in the stomach/intestines? Please enlighten me.

Thanks

Smoky Jasmine

They are not absorbed in the mouth. They are absorbed in the stomache/intestines as you said when TAKEN by mouth.

Curcurmin supplements taken orally are typically very poorly absorbed. However, Brain Curcurmins contains a revolutionary formulation which has been demonstrated through clinical studies to have dramatically improved oral absorption.

Where can I read about the clinical studies?

scroll down to bioavailability of curcumin

Actually, what makes the curcumin available in the system is piperine, an ingredient found in black pepper (not sure if this is in this product above). I have been told to take 1/8 tsp. of black pepper with my curcumin (turmeric) and this will increase the bioavailability by 2000%. Any turmeric you take should have piperine included or you should get it through black pepper. It is also important to have some source of fat when taking it, and olive oil is recommended. I am taking curcumin for anti-inflammation for a pinched nerve and it has helped tremendously.

Murray Duffin

Turmeric also contains “aromatic turmerine” which seems to calm microglia and promote brain cell regeneration. Whole turmeric is probably better than curcumin, and bioavailability can be enhanced with liposomal delivery. Find a liposomal version of turmeric as a better alternative than curcumin.

Murray Duffin

Here is a better comment on the above “Curcumin is an extract of turmeric, and may be popular because it has somewhat higher bioavailability than turmeric. However the second most abundant component of turmeric is “aromatic turmerone”, which is a potent antiinflammatory and seems to suppress the development of amyloid plaque. Recently a new variant of turmeric has been developed called “liposomal turmeric” which has much higher bioavailability (15x) than regular turmeric. By taking liposomal turmeric you get the benefits of both curcumin and aromatic turmerone.”

“Turmeric” refers to turmeric root, which has low amounts of curcuminoids that are not hardly absorbed. If you’re referring to the curcuminoids concentrated from turmeric root (called “curcumins”), there are numerous preparations that claim to have better bioavailability than others. Our Chief Science Officer Dr. Parris Kidd is an expert on curcuminoids and strongly recommends that you look for a curcumin preparation that has been clinically proven to help your specific problem, beyond just claiming to be bioavailable. He developed the Brain Curcumins product for BrainMD, using the Longvida preparation developed at UCLA. In a clinical trial this specific preparation was found to improve attention, memory and mood while coping with a stressful mental challenge. Dr. Kidd continues to monitor the research on all bioavailable curcumins for their brain benefits.
